Raid Nets Suspect in May 27 Stamford Murder

Jonathon Catchings, 24, of Stamford was arrested early Thursday morning and charged with the May 27 murder of Raymond Hayward of Stamford. He was taken into custody during a raid on his Durant Street home by Stamford Police and U.S. Marshals.

A warrant for Catchings’ arrest was issued late Tuesday night and police have been tracking him since, Stamford Police Captain Richard Conklin said. Catchings was arrested without incident during the raid, Conklin said.

Stamford Edged in Final of Soccer Tournament

Despite scoring three early round shutouts, the Stamford U15 Premier team finished the 32nd Annual Lincoln Page Memorial Day Soccer Tournament in second place, losing 5-3 in the championship game to Albertson SC.

Albertson SC was a lot faster than Stamford FC’s previous opponents and used speed to its advantage, taking a 4-1 lead into the half, a press release said. While Stamford kept the game close, Danny Sanchez scoring his second and third goals in the second half, it proved to be too little too late.

Stamford Woman Earn's Teaching Degree

Stephanie Sciarretta of Stamford graduated from the University of Bridgeport on May 7 with a master’s degree in teaching. She finished with a 3.9 grade point average.

The commencement was held at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard and Marian L. Heard, founding director of the Points of Light Institute, served as guest speaker. Sciaretta was one of 1,470 graduates to earn degrees.

Stamford city employees got a training class on “hands-only” CPR Thursday morning to musical accompaniment. As Stamford Emergency Medical Services intern Ashwyn Basu belted out the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive,” Pamela Scott of the Stamford Health Department pushed down on a mannequin’s chest, trying to mimic the beat of the iconic disco hit. Coincidentally, the song’s rhythm is 100 beats per minute, identical to beat of a healthy heart.

Services Planned for NFL Legend Robustelli

Services for Pro Football Hall of Famer Andy Robustelli will be held Friday and Saturday at Lacerenza Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 8 Schuyler Ave. in Stamford.

Robustelli, 85, died Tuesday. He played for the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams in the National Football League and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. Robustelli served as director of operations of the Giants from 1974-78 and also had a successful business career with Robustelli Corporate Services.

New Law Gives In-State Tuition to Undocumented

Diego Aguilar graduated from Brien McMahon High School last year as class valedictorian. He was accepted to Cornell University and the University of Connecticut. But when summer turned into fall, Aguilar found himself at Norwalk Community College instead of the Ivy League.

Sunny With a Chance To Dance in Stamford

Samantha has had plenty to dance about this week — the sun has been out virtually non-stop in Stamford since Monday morning. And if the forecast is correct, she will be able to stay in her groove heading into next week as well.

The temperatures will drop Thursday to a much more comfortable low to mid 70s after hitting the 80s on Wednesday, the National Weather Service says. It should also be a good day to fly a kite with northwest winds of 13 to 23 mph and gusts potentially as high as 33 mph. Temperatures are expected to drop to 47 degrees Thursday night, the forecast says.
