Nicola “Nick” Melia of Stamford has been indicted by a federal grand jury on five counts of collecting extensions of credit by extortionate means, U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut David B. Fein announced.
Melia, 78, made “street loans” to a person in Fairfield County and threatened the person with violence if the loan was not repaid, Fein said in a release. The indictment said the threats were made between Nov. 15, 2010, and Jan. 30, the release said. The indictment was returned Tuesday in New Haven.
Melia was arrested on March 23 and is being held in custody.
