You can help provide sports and academic scholarships for local children by taking part in a game night and book fair Sunday at Barnes & Noble in Stamford Town Center. The event is a benefit for the Josh and Tyler Stephens Memorial Fund, started in memory of brothers 9 and 5 years old who were killed in a tragic car accident four years go.
“They were wonderful little boys,” said Francheska Velazquez, an extended family member and fund-raising coordinator. Among their favorite activities were sports and reading. The memorial fund reflects the boys’ interests through the projects it supports.
“Their legacy and memory lives on through their foundation by helping local kids to play sports, [by providing] academic scholarships and promoting literacy,” noted Velazquez.
She adds that the foundation, established shortly after the brothers’ deaths, has provided the funds to enable two dozen children to play on youth football and basketball teams. It also has sponsored summer camp opportunities, promoted literacy in Stamford schools and provided academic scholarships for Trinity Catholic School students.
The fund-raiser takes place at Barnes & Noble Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. Educational games from ThinkFun will be featured, and a percentage of purchases will be donated to the Josh and Tyler Stephens Memorial Fund.
