The Mid Fairfield Stars 14-and-under girls hockey team won two games Saturday in the New England Tier I Regional Tournament at the Rinks at Shelton to advance to the semifinals Sunday.
The Stars opened play Saturday with an 11-1 trouncing of the New Hampshire Avalanche, that state's champions. The Stars dominated from the outset as Cat Crawley scored 19 seconds into the game to lead the onslaught.
The Stars hit the ice later Saturday and thumped the Rhode Island Ixpress, 8-1. The Stars scored five unanswered goals in the first period.
Mid Fairfield, ranked fourth in the nation by MyHockeyRankings.com, play in the semifinals Sunday morning. The finals are Sunday afternoon, with the winner of the eight-team tournament advancing to the national tournament. The Stars won the Connecticut state title last month. They opened the New England tournament Friday with a 3-1 win over the Connecticut Polar Bears.
