Few Stamford residents living in the Glenbrook and Cove neighborhoods had gone out to vote in the special election for the vacancy in the 148th District House. By 3 p.m. Tuesday, slightly more than 900 people had voted, Stamford’s registrar of voters office said. Polls are open until 8 p.m.

Five candidates are on the ballot: Republican Charles Pia Jr., Democrat Daniel Fox, independent Monique Thomas, Green Party candidate Rolf Maurer and John Mallozzi, a Democrat running as a petition candidate.

The Stamford Board of Education’s $230 million budget for 2011-12 sailed through the Board of Finance Thursday night hitting only a few ripples. The BofF approved the budget, 4-2, with member Bob Kolenberg praising the school board for keeping costs in check.   

“To the Board of Education, moving forward please do the same thing,” Kolenberg said.

The budget approved by the Board of Finance calls for an increase of 2.79 percent, or just over $6.2 million.

Democrat Carlo Leone won the District 27 state senate seat in Tuesday’s special election by a decisive margin, thwarting his Republican opponent’s second attempt at securing the job.

Leone received 4,391 votes. Republican Bob Kolenberg received 3,725, and 25 votes were cast for Green Party write-in candidate Rolf Maurer.

Leone, currently the representative for Assembly District 148, will fill the seat vacated by Andrew McDonald when he left the Senate to join Gov. Dannel Malloy’s administration as general counsel.

There was a sense of muted disappointment at Shelly's on the River in Stamford on Tuesday night as Bob Kolenberg held his after-party in the wake of his defeat for the empty seat in the state Senate. As the candidate went around the room and thanked everybody for their support, others divided up to discuss what went wrong.

Carlo Leone has won the election for state Senate with totals from one city voting district in Stamford remaining to be reported. The preliminary Stamford vote totals are 4,168 for Leone, 3,138 for Republican Bob Kolenberg and 24 for Green Party write-in candidate Rolf Maurer.

The District 27 state Senate seat represents parts of Stamford and Darien. The seat in the General Assembly in Hartford became vacant earlier this year when Andrew McDonald accepted an appointment as general counsel to Gov. Dannel Malloy.

The Stamford Board of Finance will meet Wednesday, Feb. 23, to reconsider funding requests from city entities that previously were denied. Those items are on the agenda. What is not on the agenda, but would certainly be the most significant meeting development, is the expected departure of Chairman Joseph Tarzia.
